New World Championships dates

The Ocean Spirit organizers are sorry but they have had to move the dates of the event to one week earlier. This change is final (the organisers promise there are not going to be any more changes). The new World Championships dates are from July 23rd to August 2nd 2009.

Amendment to Rule change for Long Boat class

We have made a very slight amendment to the Long Boat class rules. They now read as follows:

Long Boat: The hull may be any shape as long as the maximum concave depth under a straight edge, placed perpendicular to the long axis of the kayak at any point on the hull, is less than 10mm. There are no additional restrictions on deck design, hull radii or seat location.. The kayak can have up to 4 fin boxes, as long as there are no fins in them. Fin boxes must be covered OR empty, and may be no longer than 25 cm and no wider than 2 cm”

The World’s Committee will have the final decision on any dispute, based upon whether any non-conformance is due to a bad repair/warp or a deliberate attempt to break/bend the rules.

Update on Changes to the World Rules

The WSKA committee wishes to publicise the following changes to the World rules. Although voting is a strong request to the committee to action change; the committee has the final verdict.
  • After detailed discussion it has been decided not to implement a cadet class for the Juniors at present. This is because we feel that there is already too much time pressure on the competition organisers, with the World Championships currently needing 10 days of competition which means 5 days of surfing on 2 separate sites. So the Junior class age requirements will remain unchanged with Junior being defined as being "18 years of age or younger on December 31 of the competition year."
  • The age range for the Masters class will change to be between 40 to 49. Over 50s can enter the Grand Master class but not the Masters.
  • For the team event the number of alternates will change to 2 for each class.

Rule Change for the Long Boat class

New Hull rules for Long boat for the World Surf Kayak Championships 2009 following the Bakio Proposal.

“Long Boat: No fins allowed. The hull may be flat, concave, or convex in the cross section. Concave sections must be no deeper than 1 cm when measured perpendicular from a meter stick placed across the hull. The hull shape must be a continuous radius - no steps, channels, or ridges are allowed. The radii may vary over the entire length of the hull. There are no additional restrictions on deck design, hull radii or seat location.
